Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine specializing in the function and diseases of the eye.

Specialists who train in the medical and surgical treatment of the eye are called Ophthalmologists. These medical professionals are essentially eye doctors with advanced medical and surgical training in the eye and vision care. Ophthalmologists diagnose and treat all eye diseases, perform surgeries, and prescribe and fit eyeglasses and contact lenses to correct vision problems.

While ophthalmologists are trained to care for all eye problems and conditions, some ophthalmologists specialize further in a specific area of medical or surgical eye care. These are called subspecialties and they could include areas such as:

  • Glaucoma
  • Retina
  • Cornea
  • Pediatrics
  • Neurology
  • Oculo-plastic surgery
