Movement Therapy Training

Myrtue Mental Health is excited to share a new opportunity for mental health professionals to bring our innovative program Movement Therapy to their clinical practice! With the generous support of the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation, we are developing a continuing education program to equip therapists with training and curriculum to implement Movement Therapy in their work with clients and to use these tools for professional sustainability.

Our first Movement Therapy Training Retreat will be September 14 - 18, 2026. Contact us to learn more.

What is Movement Therapy?

Movement Therapy is a 12-week group therapy program developed at Myrtue Medical Center that helps clients learn to listen to their bodies, identify stuck patterns of stress and trauma, and use movement, breath-work, sensory engagement, and social connection to move toward healing. This program provides a structured therapeutic curriculum that integrates multiple evidence-based somatic approaches, including Polyvagal Theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Somatic Experiencing (SE), and Trauma-Informed Yoga.

What will the Training Retreat include?

The training retreat will provide comprehensive training on Movement Therapy for Adults and Movement Therapy for Families with the following elements:

  • 30-40 hours of in-person instruction, participatory demo Movement Therapy sessions, application mini-practicums, as well as 10 hours of consultation after the training to support implementation.
  • Curriculum for the adult and family programs, including step-by-step outlines for each group session and all materials for clients participating in groups. The curriculum will also include information on program delivery and operational needs such as insurance billing, progress note documentation, marketing, and scheduling.
  • Experiential practices to strengthen the therapist's own nervous system health, capacity for co-regulation, and professional sustainability. Participants will create a plan for personal “nervous system hygiene” – using these tools regularly to process and release professional and personal life stress.
  • Daily lunch and optional group activities during the week outside training sessions.
