Surgery

The Surgery Department at Myrtue Medical Center employs six registered nurses on the regular staff, one surgery technician and a perioperative generalist.

Myrtue Medical Center has two anesthesia providers who provide 24-hour coverage and pain clinic services.

Many surgeons commute from Council Bluffs and the Omaha area to provide surgical services to our community.

Pre Surgery

After the doctor has scheduled you for surgery, a registered nurse will call you at your home and interview you. At this time, we are happy to answer your questions, obtain vital information about your health status and prepare you for your hospital visit.

After being admitted to the hospital in the Admissions Department, you will be assigned a room in the Outpatient Surgical area. We will then do a physical assessment, prepare you for surgery and answer any questions. If you have questions for your surgeon, we arrange a visit for you with him prior to surgery. You will then be transported to the operating room where your operation/procedure will be completed.

Post Surgery

After surgery, some patients require monitored time in the post-anesthesia care unit. You will be there with a specially trained registered nurse in attendance. Not all patients require this service. Some patients return to Phase II recovery where they are initially admitted.

In Phase II, you are monitored for discomfort and progress, given fluids and food, and given written instructions for home care.

If you need to stay overnight or need extended observations, you will be admitted to the West Medical/Surgical floor until you are discharged.

The endoscopy unit is also located in the surgery unit. With this equipment, we can look into your stomach or large intestine. These are diagnostic tools for many illnesses. Many people are alive today because of early diagnosis and treatment provided by these procedures.

Sedation is generally given during these examinations. After a short recovery time, patients return home the same day.
