Emergency Department

The Myrtue Medical Center Emergency Department (ED) operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Whether it is a life threatening condition or a less urgent condition, our staff is ready to handle a wide range of emergency situations.

MMC is a level IV, Community Trauma Center.

The Myrtue Medical Center - Harlan Clinic practitioners provide medical staff coverage in the ED Monday through Friday and most weekends. Physicians from Emergency Practice Associates provide medical staff coverage Friday 7:00 pm through Monday 6:00 am one weekend per month and most holidays.

Medical Practitioners in the ED are advanced trauma life support certified (ATLS).

Registered nurses provide the nursing care in the ED. The RN's are also certified in trauma care (TNCC).

Dr. Scott Markham is the ED Medical Director and Trauma Director.

Linda Quinn, RN, BSN is the ED Nursing Manager and Trauma Coordinator.

What to expect in the Emergency Department

By understanding the way an Emergency Department works, the experience may not be as traumatic for you and your family...

A nurse will determine the severity of your condition based on an initial assessment and history. This process is called "triage".

Additional information such as address and insurance information will be obtained by the admitting personnel. No one who comes to the ED will be turned away regardless of whether he or she has health insurance.

People with the most serious condition are taken directly into an exam room. Those persons with less urgent conditions may need to wait in the waiting room until a room is available.

Once in an exam room, the ED Practitioner will examine you and order appropriate tests. Treatment is ordered based on the Practitioner's findings. You may be discharged, transferred, or admitted to the hospital. If discharged, written dismissal instructions will be provided.
