Mumps Vaccinations Now Available Up to Age 46
May 11, 2006
With over 1,600 cases of mumps in the state, the Iowa Department of Public Health has expanded the ages of Iowans eligible to receive the mumps vaccination outside of private medical clinics. Now, anyone 18 through 46 years old can receive the mumps vaccination from the Shelby County Public Health Department.
Three clinics have been scheduled to be held at the Public Health Office of Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. They will be: Wednesday, May 17, from 12:00-7:00 pm; Thursday, May 18, from 12:00-7:00 pm; and Tuesday, May 23, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.
The vaccine has been provided through the Iowa Department of Public Health and the CDC. A $7.50 administration fee will be charged. However, no one 18-46 will be turned away because of the inability to pay. Those with health insurance that pays for immunizations are encouraged to get the mumps vaccine from their own medical provider.
Two doses of the MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) vaccine is the best way to prevent mumps. Most Iowans 26-46 have received only one dose. Persons who have had the mumps disease do not need to be vaccinated.
